Occupy Marvel

James Sturm - author, cartoonist, educator and life long comics geek - writes in Slate on Tuesday about a subject dear to my heart.

Jack Kirby’s estate still isn’t seeing a dime from all these Marvel Comics movies. Sturm’s opinion is that a boycott of this summer’s Avengers movie is great way to show your support for the visual superman who - at the very least - co-created the Marvel Universe.

I agree whole-heartedly that Disney/Marvel MUST make some attempt to correct this, even though the court system has not been as generous to the Kirby cause as they were to the families of the creators of Superman. Jack, and his wife Roz, may be gone, but his contribution to the Marvel Universe is virtually incalculable. Pay this family, Marvel.

I’m going to see the movie, ‘cause I guess I’m a weasel, but I know going in that much of its magic comes from Jack Kirby.
